Summer cabin

A remote cabin in the woods.....a peaceful, non-motorized, lake....and good friends for company. Not to mention some good wine! Ahhh, summer is such a wonderful time of year. Picture a calm lake, with nothing but a single rowboat and two friends rowing through the water, gently breaking the early morning stillness. A few fish can be seen jumping above the water, and, with the exception of the duelling roosters, even the birds appeared to still be sleeping. Such was my morning not too long ago when I had the luxury of spending the weekend at a friend's rustic, summer cabin.  Rising early and gliding through the water was a wonderful start to the day. Next came coffee with just the right amount of Baileys. And for my unfortunate friend, a cupful of java heavily dosed with....salt? Oops, I thought it was sugar! The evening was spent with candles and an outdoor fire lighting up our evenings, and wine to enhance the ambiance, it was restful and memorable. The seven teen-aged girls did add some excitement to the event, as one might expect. With giggling anticipation they headed down to the dock for a late night swim. Their laughter and talking echoed up to us (and the rest of the lake) as they floated under moon and stars. Such nights are the ones that burn memories deep into your brain and years later when they are triggered by something seen or heard they have you reflecting on the past with a secret smile.

I will be sad to see it come to an end, but fall is winding its way into the early mornings and into the evenings with its wet, dewy grass and cool breezes. The days grow shorter and the sun no longer rises on my drive to work. But as the leaves start to change and brilliant oranges, reds and yellows burst through the trees, I look forward to more memorable weekends filled with, you guessed it, wine, friends and fun.

Cheers!
